Principal's Message

Kia Ora parent and whānau

One thing our school community is rich in is KINDNESS. It’s something we work hard to promote amongst our students. When we know someone is in need we try to give some additional support because not everyone’s circumstances are the same. We do our best as a school to ensure every child has equal opportunities regardless of finance or personal circumstance. Our PBS AROHA fund was set up to enable our whole community to offer support to such families.

The PBS AROHA fund enables anyone in our school community, including businesses, to donate money to help those in our school community who find it hard to make ends meet. This means PBS kids can cover trip costs, camp fees, sport fees, stationery, clothing. It also means that we can provide lunches when kids don’t have any.

If you would like to contribute to this fund you can find it in KINDO labelled PBS AROHA. You can contribute $5, $10 or $20 at any time during the year. If a local business wants to make a contribution they can contact Libby on lrichardson@pbs.school.nz

Please talk to the office or to me, if you would like to know more about our PBS AROHA fund. All discussions will be confidential.

Giving a little means a lot!

Ngā mihi,
Jess Ward – Tumuaki ~ Principal

LOOK WHAT'S NEW

Community Directory on Our Website!

Our school community is a huge asset. We want to highlight the incredible work done in the area and support local businesses to thrive. So PBS has launched an online community directory for the Kapiti Coast!  It’s in its early stages with some early adopters already on board.  It’s an affordable way of sharing your business – big, small or an “at home” venture/product/service.

The Paraparaumu Beach School Community Directory is an online, user-maintained list of businesses, events, and opportunities in the Kapiti area. The site gives local businesses the opportunity to support PBS while promoting themselves and improving their search engine visibility. This replaces our community notices sections in our newsletters.

Staff Gratitude Section

We love creativity and innovation at PBS – which is why I want to acknowledge David Parr for a current project he has launched.  David is a busy teacher at PBS who is responsible for covering teacher-release this year.  This term David has undertaken to set up a PBS TV project.  We’ll give you some more details about this in the coming weeks, but for now I wanted to applaud him for setting this project in motion.

Playground Update

If you’ve walked past the school office you will have noticed that the small adventure playground was removed as planned over the term break.  Unfortunately, the company installing the new one told us a few days before the end of term 2 that there was a delay in their scheduling.  Therefore, we now have to wait until September to have the new structure installed.  Whilst this is not ideal, we will practise patience and optimism – knowing that good things take time.

Using Māori Language at Home

It’s important for all Kiwi to learn te reo.  Each week our newsletter will include phrases that you might like to try out at your place.  After all, it will take the whole nation to keep this unique language alive.

Growth Mindset - Why It's Important to Teach GM to Our Students

Consider a moment in time when you failed at something.  You probably recovered and moved on with new determination; if so that’s because you had a growth mindset.  Failing at something doesn’t mean you are a failure for life.  Those with a growth mindset can work through that event and try again. However, those with a fixed mindset will find it harder to shake off and forge forward, because if you believe that you’re a failure, why persist.

Here’s an interesting illustration of this:

“In one study, seventh graders (12-13 year olds) told us how they would respond to an academic failure – a poor test grade in a new course.  Those with a growth mindset, no big surprise, said they would study harder for the next test.  But those with the fixed mindset said they would study less for the next test.  If you don’t have the ability, why waste your time?  And they said, they would seriously consider cheating!  If you don’t have the ability, they thought, you just have to look for another way.”

Access to Free Period Products

PBS has signed up to the new government initiative that aims to provide free period products to students in schools in New Zealand.  Periods are a fact of life for half the population.  Despite this, young people don’t always have access to the products they need; this in turn can affect students’ attendance and engagement at school.  Students also miss out on sporting and cultural activities and can feel embarrassed and ashamed about not being supported to manage their periods.  This affects their achievement and wellbeing.

We have ordered and received a supply of products.  This will be available for students to access discreetly at our school.  Students will be informed of where the products are kept.

If you have any questions in regards  to this scheme, please contact vwilson@pbs.school.nz.

Lost Property

Lost property will be on display on Wednesday until 4.15pm at the netball courts.  Please take the opportunity to walk past and check for any missing items. Anything unnamed or unclaimed by the end of the week will be donated to the Koha shed.
