Welcome to the final week of Term 1.
Today’s newsletter contains information about:

Last week I attended the Wellington Regional Principals’ Association conference, which provided the opportunity to hear some fascinating speakers. They shared their knowledge and life lessons relevant to the education setting but also relevant to life in general, and whilst I won’t be able to do them justice by quoting them here without the full backstory context, I will share three take-aways that aren’t new ideas but are really great everyday reminders.
- Choose your attitude – From the moment you wake up, make it a conscious choice. Ask yourself, “Who do I want to be today? What impact do I want to have?” When you are aware of your choice, you control your attitude—it doesn’t control you.
- Play – Playing is just as important for adults as it is for children. Some of the benefits of adult play is that it can foster creativity, sharpen your sense of humour and help you to cope more effectively with stress.
- Make someone’s day – There are a number of studies that show acts of kindness or selfless giving not only helps others but also improves our own health and well-being.
Thanks for supporting the Sports Ambassadors Fancy Feet and Wheels Day last Friday. This was a fitting end to Movin’ March, and the creativeness on display was awesome!
We will be holding our whole school assembly on Friday morning at 9:30am (weather permitting). School finishes at 3:00pm for the start of the April school holidays.
Term 2 starts on Monday, 29 April.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S GREAT NEWS CORNER:
Sharing good news spreads positivity, changes attitudes and ultimately leads to more people feeling encouraged and happy
Last week, Room 3 walked down to the beach to do a big clean up. Because low tide wasn’t due until 11.15am, they went and picked up rubbish all around the carparks, picnic areas and shops, then they went to the beach to do a clean-up. They found that the majority of rubbish they picked up was around the shop businesses. Our beach was in pretty good condition, which is a great thing! The class and parent helpers spent around 30 minutes foraging for rubbish, only to find a small amount. Thanks to our local council for providing us with the necessary tools and the high vis jackets to get the job done! Each class in Te Moana syndicate has embarked on a beach clean up as part of their Inquiry unit. Great giving back to our community and protecting our environment, tamariki ma!

PBS & the wider school community has always been a part of my life; having been a pupil myself, alongside my siblings and now being a a parent of current pupils. Being on the school board does not just stem from this connection but a desire to be involved in the future of Paraparaumu Beach School beyond my own whānau.
I believe that education is as equally as important as a sense of belonging; I would like to represent the Māori whānau in this kura and I have taken steps to do so by joining the whānau rōpu and encourage other whānau to do the same so that they too, can be involved in the emerging kaupapa Māori of this wonderful school.
I bring over 10 years experience in administration and team management, and am closely involved with the operation of a locally owned and operated Before, After School care and Holiday Programme. Thinking outside the box is second nature to me; but I still consider all aspects when making decisions, be it the wellbeing of the tauira (students) or the school as a whole.
I am enthusiastic and dedicated in utilising my skills on the School Board and in our kura.

I’m excited to accept a Board role, using my professional experience to assist the Board and give back to the school. As a former student of Paraparaumu Beach School with excellent memories of the school and teaching staff, I’m pleased that my daughters follow in my footsteps. There is a strong sense that Paraparaumu Beach School is a wonderful, supportive, and nurturing school and my whānau feels incredibly fortunate to be a part of the PBS community. We have amazing staff and parents who give students the opportunity to thrive so I look forward to building on this foundation with the Board.

Te Reo Māori Night Classes - Be in Quick!
As previously advised, this year we are offering three separate Te Reo Māori night classes (Level 1, 2 and 3). Classes will take place on Wednesday nights at school (starting in Term 2) and each are limited to 30 people, so get in quick!
Timing: Wednesdays at PBS from 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Programme duration: 20 weeks (two hours each week)

Using the @School App
I will regularly highlight a button on the @school app. This week it is
The Blog is where a student has published a piece of work they wish to share with the family. The number in the red bubble shows you how many blog posts have been published but have not yet been read. If you have not yet checked this feature out have a look.
This is what you see when you push the button. At the top left you will see ‘select a blog’, this gives you the option to select ‘all’ your childs blogs (Yr 1 – Yr 8), their ‘junior’ blogs (Yr 1 – Yr 4) or their ‘senior’ blogs (Yr 5 – Yr 8). As this is a new function there may be students in Yrs 5 – 8 who do not have ‘junior blogs’.
The orange speech bubble is what your child wrote. The green speech bubble is what their teacher wrote and in the bottom right-hand corner is a speech bubble that allows you to comment as well. The button that says ‘open’ will take you to a photo
Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.
Pepeha
Pepeha is used in situations where you need to introduce yourself, it is a way of making connections with others. Here is a simple pepeha that you may use:
Tena koutou katoa (greetings to you all)
Ko…………….au ( I am [name])
Nō ……………au (I am from [placename])

Parent Voice Survey
Thank you to the parents who took part in our face to face focus groups around communication channels and the @school app. We followed this up by sending out an online survey for those parents who were unable to make the focus group.
You will have received an email recently with the survey link. If you have a spare 5 minutes, we’d appreciate your feedback.
Out of Zone Applications Open for 5 Year Old New Entrants
If you have any children due to start school soon that you have not let us know about, or if you have friends or neighbours who don’t currently have a child at PBS, but may be hoping to enrol a student here in Terms 3 or 4, please ask them to contact our school office as soon as possible. Thank you.

Applications close at 12 noon on Monday, 6 May.
Hurricane Poua
This past Saturday, our Year 5 and 6 Rippa Rugby team had the opportunity to showcase their skills at the Hurricane Poua versus Blues Women’s Rugby game in Levin. Despite Hurricane Poua not securing the win, our PBS team stole the spotlight with their exceptional performance during the halftime game. Special thanks to Craig Thomson for coaching the team at this event.

Netball
Congratulations to the students who trialled last week and now make up our netball teams. You all did very well! We were especially impressed with those students who, although they did not make the team they’d hoped to be in, have shown a growth mindset. Instead of seeing this as a negative they have seen it as an opportunity to grow their skills and have stayed positive. By showing resilience and bouncing back from a setback, they are supporting their team mates to have a great season.
“With determination and the right mindset, anything is possible.” Maddy Gordan (NZ Silver Fern) While at school Maddie never played in a team higher than the school ‘C’ team, but she kept working hard to achieve her dream.
Lost Property
Please check the lost property over the fine days this week at the netball courts. There is a lot of it! Anything unnamed or unclaimed will be taken to the Koha shed at the end of term.
AIMS Games Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser

There’s no need to pack a lunch on Friday, 12 April because you can buy a sausage or two instead! Help our PBS AIMS Game Girl’s Hockey team get to the AIMS Games in Mount Maunganui. Payment via Kindo is due by Wednesday, 10 April.

Years 5 - 8 Tough Guy and Gal Challenge
The Junior Tough Guy and Gal Challenge will be held on Tuesday, 28 May in Palmerston North. We have reserved 60 spots for our Years 5 – 8 students, with 30 for Years 5 – 6 and 30 for Years 7 – 8. The event costs $30 per student.
As there are only 60 spots available, admission will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Please complete permission forms and payments through Kindo by 14 May.
As this event will take place at the Massey University Recreation Centre, we will require parent volunteers to transport and supervise students throughout the event.
