Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou,
If you’re reading this newsletter – thank you! Reading the weekly school newsletter may seem like a mundane task at times, but it’s an important routine for parents at all times of the year.
Just a heads up … we are noticing lots of sickness around the school at the moment. Though we can count the number of Covid cases (that we know of) on one hand, children seem to be unwell with a number of ailments – tummy bugs, chicken pox and colds. With low numbers of relief teachers, we are starting to split classes again on some days to cater for PBS staff who are under the weather too. To keep everyone as healthy as possible, please keep unwell children at home – tucked up in bed. Thank you.
Today’s newsletter is packed with useful information for our whānau, with a few highlights being:
- PBS Board Outstanding Achievement Award – nominations close this Friday
- Parent working bee – can you help out? Thanks to the parents who have offered their help so far
Upcoming dates for your awareness:
- Board Meeting 7pm tonight (staffroom)
- Te Moana Camp (Yr 5 & 6) 22 – 24 November
- District Kapa Haka hui – Friday, 1 December
- Last day of school is Friday, 15 December. School closes at 12.30pm on this day
Before I sign off this newsletter, check out the blossom snow below! Have a great week everyone.

PRINCIPAL’S GREAT NEWS CORNER:
Sharing good news spreads positivity, changes attitudes and ultimately leads to more people feeling encouraged and happy
With huge gratitude to Dane Coles, PBS now is the proud owner of an All Blacks Rugby World Cup Rugby Jersey, signed by the entire team! Dane was happy for us to decide whether to raffle it or use it for another purpose. The staff have given this some thought and have decided to have it framed and hung in our reception area as an inspiration for PBS kids. When Dane was a PBS student himself his dream to be an All Black was well known. We think this jersey will help remind kids to dream big and know that if you put your mind to it you can achieve great things. Thank you Dane!

PBS Board Outstanding Achiever Award Nominations - Closing this Week
If you have a child in Years 5-8 you would have received an email recently regarding this award. Our Board is now seeking nominations for this year’s Outstanding Achiever Award.
The purpose of this award is to acknowledge students who have achieved at a very high level, and to promote these students as role models throughout our school community in a manner that reflects and incorporates our school CREST values. We encourage nominations from Years 5-8 students.
This award is made annually to students who attend the school and who during the previous 12 months have made an outstanding contribution (in-school or out-of-school) in areas of academic, cultural, sports, community service or other activities. Paraparaumu Beach School’s Board is keen to promote high achievement in a positive manner.

Parent Working Bee
The outdoor staging we have built on the school field is about to enter its second phase. This involves installing roped fencing (similar to that pictured below) along the back edge. We have purchased all the posts and roped sections. We just need some willing helpers to get the posts concreted in and then the roped sections fixed in place. If you are able to lend a hand either during school hours or after hours we would love to hear from you. Although many students regard Mr Trask as a superhero, he will need some side-kicks to help with this task.
Please email jtrask@pbs.school.nz if you are willing and able 🙂
Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.
Here are some essential kupu that you may hear ia ra (everyday)
• E noho rā – Goodbye (from a person leaving)
• Haere rā – Goodbye (from a person staying)

Awesome Student Work!
Recently I have enjoyed seeing lots of incredible student work, including the inquiry projects in Room 21, Jack’s “Jolly Roger” pirate – hand stitched with love and effort, and some creative Blossom Artwork by Room 4. All of these efforts remind me how cool it is to be a kid!
Rm 4 Blossom Art
Last week, Rm 4 made the most of all the Cherry Blossom petals with some beautiful portraits!
