Acting Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou,
Today’s newsletter is packed with useful information for our whānau, with a few highlights being:
- Book Week is next week, have you got your costume ready for the Book Character Parade?
- Dates for you calendar
- Metlink’s new fares
This week is te wiki o te reo Māori. As a school we aim to foster te reo Māori all year round. Some of the ways that we do this are: by using kupu and phrases daily in the classroom, Waiata Māori sessions every Paraire/Friday with Matenga, Senior Kapa Haka practice on Mane/Mondays, attending the local schools Kapa Haka Hui, celebrating Matariki with our community, visits to Whakarongotai Marae, Tiki tours to learn about our local history, reading traditional stories and retelling them, playing games like Kī o rahi, inviting Māori performing artists to our school and hosting Te Ahu o te reo Māori night classes for staff and parents (congratulations to everyone who recently completed their course, ka rawe koutou!).
We are always looking for ways that we can further our growth and support our tamariki on their reo journey too. Don’t be shy to share your Te Ao Māori knowledge and skills with us. We are open to new learning opportunities.
Check out Room 10s collaboratively built waka as part of their current inquiry unit. Very cool!
Saturday netball finished up on the weekend. Thank you to all of the coaches and managers for your mahi this season. And thank you also to Vicki Wilson for coordinating and overseeing the sport. Every season presents challenges and this one has been no different, but seeing the students enjoying themselves and achieving goals makes it all worthwhile. Here are the impressive results (official confirmation yet to come):
- Galaxy (Year 5 team playing in Year 6 grade) – 1st in grade
- Conquerors – 2nd in grade
- Dynamites (Yr 6 team playing in Year 7 & 8 grade) – 3rd in grade
- Blazers – 3rd in grade
- Express – 3rd in grade
- Acers – 4th in grade
- Hotshots – 4th in grade and won the Kapiti Netball Sportsmanship Cup

Sharing good news spreads positivity, changes attitudes and ultimately leads to more people feeling encouraged and happy
Last week Cath Franks rallied the troops to paint our staff room that was looking pretty drab in comparison to our newly refurbished Office area. Ngā mihi nui to the many helpful staff members for brightening up the space (even the Boss, who is on sabbatical, got stuck in!).

Aimes Games
Well done to the contingent of PBS students who attended the AIMS Games last week in Tauranga. From all accounts it was a well organised event and everyone enjoyed the experience. This year’s efforts might inspire more parents and students to take up the opportunity in future years.
Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.
This week is Māori Language Week – Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
5 reo Māori phrases to use in the morning
Maranga mai – Get up! Rise and shine
You can add to the end – e tama (my boy), e hine (my girl)
Maranga mai e tama.
Kahuna ō kākahu -put your clothes on
Haere mai ki te kai – come and eat
Kua rite koe? – Are you ready?
Kai pai te rā!
You can replace rā with – rangi (day), ata (morning)

Aroha Fund
One thing our school community is rich in is KINDNESS. It’s something we work hard to promote amongst our students. When we know someone is in need we try to give some additional support because not everyone’s circumstances are the same. We do our best as a school to ensure every child has equal opportunities regardless of finance or personal circumstance. Our PBS AROHA fund was set up to enable our whole community to offer support to such families.
The PBS AROHA fund enables anyone in our school community, including businesses, to donate money to help those in our school community who find it hard to make ends meet. It also means that we can provide lunches when kids don’t have any.
If you would like to contribute to this fund you can find it in KINDO labelled PBS AROHA. You can contribute $5, $10 or $20 at any time during the year. If a local business wants to make a contribution they can contact Libby on lrichardson@pbs.school.nz

PBS Book Week - Friday, 22 September
New Entrant Parent Information Presentation – Tātahi Syndicate
A New Entrant Information Presentation will be held for all parents of new children on Friday, 22 September 2023 from 10.00-10.30am in the staffroom.
This session will :
- Provide an overview of the ‘Transition to School’
- Provide an overview of the New Entrant Programme in reading, writing and mathematics
- Highlight how you can help at home with learning
At PBS, we believe that successful partnerships between home and school are established when both parties have a shared expectation and knowledge of their child’s learning. We would love to see you there.
School Memories Photo Orders
Photo order forms for Yrs 0-2 students, Rm 16 students and sports/teams were sent to classrooms yesterday.
Portrait and class photos can be previewed online before ordering; and team/group photos (where applicable) can be previewed online before ordering and also have a proof on the order form. Orders close on 18 October.
If you lose your order code, please contact the office.

Netball
A huge congratulations to all our netball teams that were involved in Netball Finals weekend on Saturday!
Recent Student Achievements
Wrestling: Congratulations to Jordan Esterhuizen from Room 23 who competed in the Wellington Regional Wrestling Championship on Saturday and won 1st prize in his weight division. Well done.

Metlink Fares have Changed
For your awareness, Metlink has rolled out new fares as of September 1.
- Children under five will continue to be able to travel free without a Snapper card
- Children aged 5-12 will also have free travel after they apply for the new fare on their Snapper card
- Children 13-18 years or still at secondary school will continue to receive a 75% discount to the standard adult fare with no changes required, and
- Young adults 19-24 years will get 50% off fares when they apply for the new fare on their Snapper card
