Acting Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou,
Today’s newsletter is packed with useful information for our whānau, with a few highlights being:
- Celebrating recent student successes
- Book Week is coming! Start planning your book character costume
- Dates for your calendar
I’m very proud to share the many student successes we celebrated last week.
It started with the Dance NZ Made event. We had one group of Year 7 & 8 girls entered in the Hip Hop category. Thank you to Mrs Robertson for overseeing the group. Students Marcail Rosson and Dakodah Reid led the group, choreographing a great routine, which they performed with precision. Congratulations to everyone for taking out 1st place and winning the title of Wellington Year 7 & 8 champions. Marcail also received a Golden Ticket for her efforts, which means she can attend the ‘She Shines On’ conference where dancers have the opportunity to win scholarship money and a top prize of a dance tour to New York and LA.

Next up we had Tournament of the Minds. Tournament of the Minds is a problem solving program. Its aim is to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.
Over the weekend we had 6 teams of Year 5-8 students compete in the Regional competition held at Victoria University of Wellington. Ngā mihi nui to Mr Parr and Mrs McKenna for all of your mahi behind the scenes coordinating the teams (see photos below).
All PBS teams placed either first, second or third in their chosen area. An outstanding result!

These 11 students know how to think outside the square and perform inside it. They have been invited to compete in the National competition later this month.
And finally, we have a small contingent of students competing at the AIMS Games in Tauranga this week. This has been a parent-led initiative but I want to thank Mrs Houston for taking on all the admin to support the students to get there. On Sunday Mia Thomson raced in the cross country event against 120 other competitors, some of whom had travelled from overseas. She had an amazing race, scoring a bronze medal podium finish.

Last week PBS held an internal EPro8 event so students keen to experience and take part in the science and engineering competition get a taster before teams compete at the inter-school competition in Term 4. It was great to hear there were lots of interested tamariki.

Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.
Next week is Māori Language Week – Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. This is a great opportunity to get your reo on and practise some kupu!

PBS Book Week
From the Student Council
On Friday last week some Student Councillors represented PBS at the 10th anniversary ceremony for the Coastlands Aquatic Centre. Annabelle, Ruby G & Ruby B along with the Mayor, Koro Don and other community leaders planted 4 kōwhai trees at each of the corners of the building. This was to commemorate the event and keep the positive energy flowing for this well used community resource.
New Entrant Parent Information Presentation – Tātahi Syndicate
A New Entrant Information Presentation will be held for all parents of new children on Friday, 21 September 2023 from 10.00-10.30am in the staffroom.
This session will :
- Provide an overview of the ‘Transition to School’
- Provide an overview of the New Entrant Programme in reading, writing and mathematics
- Highlight how you can help at home with learning
At PBS, we believe that successful partnerships between home and school are established when both parties have a shared expectation and knowledge of their child’s learning. We would love to see you there.

Wednesday, 6 September - Year 7 Vision Screening Information for Parents
Te Whatu Ora, Health NZ provides a vision screening programme for all Year 7 students:
- Vision – pupils will be advised of results at the time of screening. If further assessment is recommended, you will be notified by mail
- Children who wear glasses and/or are under professional care and have regular checks will not require a vision check from our service
Non-consent – please notify the school if you do not want your child being screened.
This screening is not a full assessment of your child’s vision. if you have any concerns, please see an optometrist.
Touch Rugby 2023/2024 Season
Special Needs Requests - Scooters and Clothing
Do you have a spare scooter that needs a new home? It will be well used and cared for by our special needs children. Please contact the office if you would like to donate one.
Also, clothing in sizes 6-10 required – especially shorts/trousers.

Recent Student Achievements
Kukkiwon Cup: Congratulations to Joey Olsen of Room 11 who competed at the New Zealand Kukkiwon Cup in Auckland and who won a Bronze medal in his weight division in the Nationals (making him 3rd in his weight division). He has come a long way since he started training at just 5 years old.
His next competition will be the Wellington TUNZ Open Championship end of September.
