Today’s newsletter is packed
with useful information for our whānau, with a few highlights being:
- Book Week is coming! Start planning your book character costume
- Touch registration and Year 7 vision screening information
- Dates for your calendar
Last week the weather cleared enabling the Junior Winter Tournament to go ahead. Our tamariki spent the day getting active and practising their skills. For some, it was a new sport providing the opportunity for new learning. For others it was a great chance to apply their competitiveness in their chosen sport against other local schools.
Ngā mihi nui to all of our parent helpers who supported the teams and thanks also to our sports ambassadors for role modelling leadership to their younger peers. See below for photos and more details.
Lots of cool opportunities for our students to shine continue over the coming weeks. For example, today Te Motu syndicate has been out enjoying their Winter Sports Tournament. We also have a group of talented students performing at the Dance NZ Made event. This is the first time we have sent a team and the leaders of the group have done a marvellous job choreographing their performance. Tau Kē!
This Saturday PBS will have 6 teams competing in the Tournament of the Minds. The event, which is held at Victoria University in Wellington, provides the opportunity for students to solve real life, open-ended challenges that foster creative thinking and collaboration. Teams need to be highly motivated and work effectively as a team, as adult input is minimal. They have to carefully plan and direct themselves. Good Luck!
Well done to all of our tamariki who have taken part in various winter sports teams. Some PBS teams have finals coming up. Karawhiua! I look forward to hearing how you go. I also want to take the opportunity to wish the small contingent of students heading off to the AIMS Games in Tauranga next week, all the best. Enjoy the experience!

Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.

Learning Diversity within Our School - Allergies
We have a number of students at PBS with allergies ranging from mild to severe. Among our students, there are those who have hay fever, food allergies, insect sting allergies, drug allergies, and eczema. Allergic reactions can vary in intensity, from mild to severe. In certain severe cases, allergies can trigger a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis—this constitutes a critical medical emergency. For the safety of some of our students, an epinephrine auto-injector (epi-pen) is kept at school.
We are fortunate to have a supportive school community that genuinely looks out for one another. Please ensure that your child’s medical records are kept up to date at the office so that we are aware of any changes.

Polo Shirts for Sale
Please don’t forget we have polo shirts available for sale at the office for those students who are representing the school in sports etc. Shirts are $50 each and are available to purchase via Kindo or with correct cash at the office.
Although we have some shirts available for lending out, there are very limited sizes/amounts available and these will be given out on a first come, first served basis.
Celebrating Our Athletes at the Zespri AIMS Games!
We are thrilled to introduce our fantastic team representing Paraparaumu Beach School at the Zespri AIMS Games. This prestigious intermediate tournament brings together over 11,500 athletes from across the region and overseas to compete in a diverse range of team and individual sports.
This year’s team is:
- BMX Rider: Alex Martin
- Tennis Player: Josh Crabb
- Swimmer: Tanaya Suri
- Cross-Country Runner: Mia Thomson
- Female Hockey Team: Quin Steinmetz, Holly McCullagh, Lulu Collett, Sienna Carter, Amy Summer, Kyra Pulepule, Phoebe Corin, Danika Stratford, Keely Collier-Fiske, Mia Thomson

PBS Hockey
On Friday, the PBS Year 3-8 hockey teams celebrated the end of a great school hockey season at the turf, with games, presentations and some food. Huge thanks to all our hockey coaches, without whom we couldn’t take part in the school competition: Imogen Davidson, Paul Tessier, Clare Pringle, Natasha Denision, Michelle Patterson, Tracey Tilley, Amelia Kirton and Mackenzie Shaw.
We also had nine Year 1/2 students participating in the Funsticks program. See you all next year!
Touch Rugby 2023/2024 Season
Junior Winter Tournament
Last Tuesday, Te Moana enthusiastically participated in the annual Interschool Junior Winter Tournament. Our students displayed enthusiasm and sportsmanship in hockey, netball, rippa rugby, and football. The event embraced participation and camaraderie, with our teams excelling in both social and competitive divisions.
Our students embraced new challenges, many venturing into sports they hadn’t tried before. Amidst this growth-driven spirit, our competitive teams emerged triumphantly. The hockey team secured a resounding victory in the finals, while the Year 5 and Year 6 netball teams, along with our competitive football teams, maintained undefeated throughout the tournament.
Congratulations to Te Moana students for exemplifying our school’s values both on and off the field. We extend gratitude to our supportive whānau who assisted in team management during this event.
PBS Book Week
Year 7 Vision Screening - Information for Parents
Te Whatu Ora, Health NZ provides a vision screening programme for all Year 7 students:
- Vision – pupils will be advised of results at the time of screening. If further assessment is recommended, you will be notified by mail
- Children who wear glasses and/or are under professional care and have regular checks will not require a vision check from our service
Non-consent – please notify the school if you do not want your child being screened.
This screening is not a full assessment of your child’s vision. if you have any concerns, please see an optometrist.
