"Together we are lifelong CREST learners"
Principal's Message
Hi Everyone,
After the hot day we had yesterday, it’s a timely reminder to keep our tamariki SUN SAFE. While we provide many resources, our budget doesn’t stretch to sunscreen for every student. We kindly ask that parents apply sunscreen to their children before they arrive at school each day and provide a small tube or roll-on sunscreen in their bag for reapplication throughout the day. Roll-ons are especially handy, as they’re easier for children to use on their own without wasting extra sunscreen.
Wide brimmed hats are also a requirement for school this term. If your child doesn’t have a hat they are stuck playing under a veranda at break times, which isn’t much fun.
Let’s work together to keep everyone safe in the sun!
PS: If you have any second-hand wide brimmed hats you no longer need at home, feel free to donate them to school. Thank you
Keep reading because today’s newsletter contains information on:

- PBS AROHA
- Pool Re-painting project – we are halfway there with sponsorship funds!
- Refurbishing senior bathrooms update

Take care,
Jess Ward

Board of Trustees Outstanding Achievement Award
The purpose of this award is to acknowledge students who have achieved at a very high level of their chosen pursuit (academic, sporting, cultural, community service or other activities). It is intended to be used to promote these students as role models throughout the school community in a manner that encourages other children to look up to and strive to emulate. Students in Years 4-8 are eligible to be nominated for the award.
Official nomination forms are available from the school office or on the school website under ‘Board of Trustees’. They should be completed and returned as soon as possible. The nomination closing date is Friday, 22 November.
For further information on the awards process, please contact Assistant Principal Vicki Wilson during school hours on 298 5775.
Repainting the Pool - Your Support Will Help Us Make a Splash!
In term 2 this year I let you know about our project to sand-blast and repaint our much loved school pool. As only one of three schools on the Kapiti Coast still with a school pool, we are desperate to retain this resource.
The school has the funds to sandblast the pool interior but we’ve been seeking sponsorship from local businesses to cover the $16,000 epoxy painting costs. I’m delighted to let you know that we are half way there with funding. The following businesses have each donated $1000 to support us and we are so very grateful:
- Brosnan
- Contract Air Services Ltd
- Fun Zone Out of School Care
- JMac Contracting Ltd
- New World Kapiti
- Projex Electrical
- Property Brokers
- sKids
If your business is able to get us closer to our target please contact Marie on mbarfoote@pbs.school.nz and we will send you the sponsorship details for consideration. Thank you.
Senior Bathrooms Update
I had hoped the senior bathrooms would be fully updated by now, but due to factors beyond our control, we’re not there yet. The quotes the Ministry received for the work came in at almost double the allocated budget, so we’ve been asked to re-evaluate our plans. However, our ‘wish list’ is quite modest, so I plan to advocate strongly to keep as much of it as possible.
My apologies to our senior students who provided valuable feedback but haven’t yet seen any changes. Thank you for your patience, and I’ll keep you posted on progress.
Kid's Quote
A young student in the medical room was praised for knowing his full name.
He replied: My mum knows my name also and she tells me what it is if I forget!
Using the @School App
I will regularly highlight a button on the @school app. This week it is:
This button takes you to our school website. The website is the place to find information about PBS.
Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.
Kīwaha (idiom)
A super simple saying that you can use in your everyday conversations.
Kia pai te rā (have a good day)
Acers vs Staff & Parents Netball Game
Last Friday we had our annual netball game which is the highlight of the netball season. We had an enthusiastic crowd watching the game who cheered both sides on. All players in the Acers showed fantastic skill on the court and great sportmanship. Well done to all of you.
We also had two of our students umpire this game who did a fantastic job. Thank you Zoe Gee and Alyssa Hudson, you both have a great future as umpires if this is the path you want to take.
Finally, thank you to the teachers and parents that took to the court for this game. As you heard and saw on Friday, this is a wonderful event to be part of.
Netball
With the winter netball season well and truly over, it is disappointing that there are still netball uniforms outstanding. These need to be returned to school asap.
Also, for those whānau who have made arrangements to pay off the netball fees can you please remember to make small regular payments to enable these to be paid off before the end of the year. If you are having any problems with doing this please contact Debbie, in the school office, and have a kōrero with her.
Home Reading Book Amnesty - November 2024
We have lots of home readers missing and as they cost $10.00 each book, we are desperate to get them returned.
Can you please have a look at home (under the bed, in the cupboards/bookcases) for any readers, then drop them into the labelled book box outside the staffroom.
Thank you.
New Entrant Parent Information Presentation – Tātahi Syndicate
A New Entrant Information Presentation will be held for all parents of new children on Friday, 29 November 2024 from 10.00-10.30am in the staffroom.
This session will :
- provide an overview of the ‘Transition to School’
- provide an overview of the New Entrant Programme in reading, writing and mathematics
- highlight how you can help at home with learning
In Tātahi Syndicate, we believe that successful partnerships between home and school are established when both parties have a shared expectation and knowledge of their child’s learning. We would love to see you there.
Treat Yourself Tuesdays
Mini iceblocks will be on sale at morning tea time every Tuesday until further notice. Cost is $1 each.

PBS Aroha Fund - Can you help a little?
It’s November which means Christmas is just around the corner! At PBS we know that sometimes Santa’s sleigh tips more gifts out at some addresses and not so many at others. He really needs to get that sleigh in for a Warrant of Fitness!
If you can spare $5, $10 or $20, the PBS community could help Santa out (as we have every year). If you would like to help out, look on KINDO under PBS AROHA. You can contribute $5, $10 or $20 at any time during the year. If a local business wants to make a contribution they can contact Debbie on accounts@pbs.school.nz to arrange another way to pay.
Last year we were incredibly grateful to the kind owners of Paraparaumu Doors who went on a shopping spree to supplement Santa’s contributions! If your company wants to get involved this year, we’d love to hear from you.
Please talk to the office, Sarah Chambers or Jess Ward if you would like to know more about our PBS AROHA fund. All discussions will be confidential.
Giving a little means a lot!
